Don’t Overlook the Garage when Selling Your Home in Raleigh

To sell your home quickly in Raleigh, you want to prepare the home as best you can. Often this means focusing on the curb appeal, getting the yard in order before moving inside and organizing, de-cluttering, and deep cleaning. However, in the process of getting your home sale ready it is often easy to overlook one big piece that more and more home buyers are interested in: the garage.

What tends to happen is that as home sellers “clean” the living areas of their homes, the clutter piles seem to end up just moving from the inside out to the garage. This serves to set up 90% of the home for a positive tour by a prospective home buyer, but can allow for the last 10% to be a deal breaker. If one of the last visuals they see when finishing the walk through of your home is your garage filled with everything you did not want in the house, the potential home buyer could be left with a bad taste in their mouth, tainting the overall experience in the process.

To prevent something like this from happening, be sure to include your garage’s contents when you are planning on organizing your home. Just as you would do in the living areas, create piles of: Keep, Donate, Maybe, and Trash and place items accordingly. For the things that you are keeping, make sure that you store them in a clean and organized way – this will make the garage appear both more visually appealing as well as more spacious. If even after you try to de-clutter your garage you find that a number of boxes still remain, think about asking a friend to “store” the belongings for you until you have sold the home or, if it comes down to it, you can even rent out a storage unit. The bottom line is you should do whatever it takes to get the area to be as clean as possible.

So as you prepare to sell your home here in Raleigh, think about the big picture – garage included! How can you turn this space into an area with some “marketing potential”? Some of the more common uses are of course a hobby area or dedicated “man cave,” but also think about how you can lay the foundation to market the space as a home gym or home office. When preparing your home for buyers interested in living in the Raleigh area, be sure to give the garage its due and set yourself up for a quick home sale in the process!
